Betty’s – St Helen’s Square (café + evening meals)
Enjoy visiting the famous Betty’s tearooms in the Centre of town. Quite expensive but a real treat and worth the queue. Shorter queues are first thing in the morning and last thing at night. You can reserve afternoon in the Belmont Rooms at the weekend.
Mannions – 1 Blake Street (café)
Excellent homemade food with small outdoor space with heating in the winter. Great for breakfast and lunch. One of our favourites!
Spring Espresso – Fossgate and Lendal (café)
Lovely smooth coffee, friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
Brew and Brownie and the Bakeshop – Museum Street (café)
Uses great local produce and has a fabulous cake-maker. Is quite small and can be hard sometimes to find a seat.
The Perky Peacock – North Street Postern Tower (café)
Quirky café situated in tower by the River Ouse selling great coffee and cakes.
Fossgate Social – Fossgate (café)
Young and lively café with great atmosphere.

Cosy family run Italian just a few minutes’ walk away, very popular for evening meals so you should book in advance. Nice deli counter for take-away food. (Closed Wednesdays).

Great lively tapas bars – on the same parade as Little Italy. They also have a restaurant in Fossgate which is larger and the other side of town.

Local Indian restaurant which has received good reports from our guests.

Real ale and good food. Based in a 17th century Inn and do a great Sunday roast!
The Black Swan – Peaseholme Green Tel 01904 679131

This is the restaurant everyone is talking about! Set up chef Tommy Banks who runs the Michelin-starred restaurant, The Black Swan and Oldstead, this restaurant is getting rave reviews.

Situated within the stunning Museum Gardens, the restaurant has fabulous views across the River Ouse and Museum Gardens and serves excellent food and ideal for a special occasion, although not cheap.

This restaurant/gastro pub is extremely popular and is known for its excellent local produce with the finest real ales, lagers, spirits and wines from around the UK. They also specialise in Yorkshire Beef cuts.

Serving high quality food daytime and evening and has a lovely secluded garden in Gillygate.
The Rattle Owl – 104 Micklegate (English) Tel 01904 658658
Fabulous restaurant for lunch and evening meals. Based in a 17th century building with a Roman building in the basement. It opened in 2016 and has been getting great reviews.

Very popular with the locals which is always a good sign and new entry in the Good Food Guide 2019. Open for evening meals on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and also great for breakfast, lunch and afternoon teas and excellent choice for vegetarians and vegans.

This is where the Chinese community eat and it comes highly recommended.

These guys have a successful street food stall in The Shambles Market and now opened a shinny new restaurant, it’s the only one of its kind in York.

Lovely little wine bar with outside eating area in quaint part of town and blankets provided in the winter to keep you warm. You can’t book but nice place to chill and have a drink whilst you wait for a table.

City Screen is a bustling, lively café bar, which is part of the cinema complex with an outside space overlooking the River Ouse, which is lovely in the summer. Great place to get all day food, no reservations needed.
